Bicycle Trip in Montalcino
It was made famous by Brunello, one of the world’s best red
wines. But Montalcino is also a magnificent city of art which, from
its hill, dominates the 3000 hectares of vineyards (1500 for
Brunello) that have given it fame and wealth.
Straddled between the basins of the Ombrone and the Orcia,
the centre is overlooked by the Fortress built in 1361 to
consolidate the fact that Montalcino had become a possession of
Siena. A second symbol of Montalcino is the slim tower of the
Town Hallbuilt between the 13th and 14th centuries. At the foot
of the tower Piazza del Popolo and the Gothic Loggia.
In the historic centre the churches of Sant’Agostino and
Sant’Egidio (14th century) are worth a visit, as is the Civic
and Diocese Museum which houses Della Robbia terracotta works
and paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century.
Roads winding among vineyards lead to Torrenieri ,
Sant’Angelo in Colle e Poggio alle Mura . From
Castelnuovo dell’Abate you reach the abbey of Sant’Antimo,
one of Italy’s Romanesque masterpieces.Montalcino has been known
for its red wines since the 15th century. However the inventor of
Brunello was Ferruccio Biondi Santi who first decided to abandon
Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Colorino vine species and concentrate on
Sangiovese
His bottle dated 1888 is probably the absolute first in history. In
1966 and 1980 respectively, Brunello was among the first Italian
wines to be granted the titles DOC (Controlled Denomination
of Origin) and DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination
of Origin).
Before Brunello may be put on the market it must be aged for
five years (six for the Reserve), two of which in oak casks. Rosso
di Montalcino may be sold after a year. The picture is completed by
Moscadello di Montalcino and Sant’Antimo, names which include very
different kinds of red and white wines.
In the 90’s the list of Tuscan DOC wines was enriched by Orcia DOC,
produced on the territories of Abbadia San Salvatore, Buonconvento
Castiglione d’Orcia, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, Pienza,
Radicofani, San Casciano dei Bagni, San Giovanni d’Asso, San Quirico
d’Orcia, Sarteano, Torrita di Siena and Trequanda.
